Daily Downloads #
We’ve noticed all plugins follow a very similar pattern. You can use this as guide to the size of a plugin & its growth over time. However you need to appropriately handle the peaks after plugin updates.

We’ve found long term daily downloads is a reliable measure of CF7 Skins growth.
Compare CF7 with CF7 Skins #
For growth, millions of people that use Contact Form 7 need to hear about CF7 Skins & decide to download the free version.
Contact Form 7
Our main target audience is people already using Contact Form 7. Contact Form 7 is the largest plugin on WordPress with 50,00+ downloads per day.

In time, general WordPress users might see Contact Form 7 + CF7 Skins as a viable free alternative to the many other WordPress form plugins, but that is not our focus at this stage.
CF7 Skins
CF7 Skins is a significant Contact Form 7 extension with 20,000+ active installs. To be sustainable we need 100,000+ active installs.

We can use daily & weekly downloads as a way to determine the relative usage of the two plugins.
- Daily 77/55,212 = 0.14 %
- Weekly 596/387,370 = 0.15%
This indicates increasing usage of CF7 Skins amongst Contact Form 7 users has great potential & should be our main focus.
| CF7 Skins usage | Current | 5X | 10X |
| % of Contact Form 7 usage | 0.15 % | 0.75 % | 1.5 % |

Plugin Directory Rankings #
The ranking algorithm is a closely guarded secret that gets changed regularly to minimize gaming by plugin & theme authors. The overall aim is to help people find better plugins. There are many factors used in deciding this ranking.
In the case of CF7 Skins, the feedback I’ve had from users is that they nearly always did not find CF7 Skins via in the plugin directory. Instead they found out about it elsewhere & used the info at https://wordpress.org/plugins/contact-form-7-skins/ to decide to download it.
There is a lot of powerful competition for forms in the plugin directory. If you search for any form related keyword, you will be unlikely to see https://wordpress.org/plugins/contact-form-7-skins/. Try the following keywords:
- https://wordpress.org/plugins/tags/contact-form/
- https://wordpress.org/plugins/tags/form-builder/
At any rate, we focus on CF7 Skins being an extension for Contact Form 7.
If you search for “”Contact Form 7”, you’ll find CF7 Skins at https://wordpress.org/plugins/search/contact+form+7/page/3/. We’ve never been on page 1 (you typically need 100,000+ Active Installs to list there) but we were earlier on the middle to bottom of page 2. We never noticed any change in weekly downloads when we were on page 2.
So at this stage I see a plugin’s ranking in the plugin directory as a measure of the plugin’s success. If you get this success, you will get more success through the increased awareness that comes from a better ranking. The main reason for Contact Form 7’s success is its success. Lots of people get to hear about it; it has astounding awareness.
If you get lots of interest from users your rating will improve but you need big changes in numbers to notice any improvement. I’ve not seen any evidence in 10 years that any changes in the factors that apply make any noticeable change in CF7 Skins ranking. If we get to 100,000 Active Installs that may change.
